Open 2021 Poems - Thomas Davison

Sandglass

By Thomas Davison

By chance I saw- an old man sitting by a small-still, crystal clear pool.
Gazing at his reflection in the- what did he find– you may wonder?
He found an old man who had wasted his life- pursuing money and material things.
He found the ugly scars and the wrinkles- the wounds to his soul.
He saw his life running out of an ugly sandglass- unstoppable– almost empty.
He found the bitterness- the anger- the frustration written on his face.
He wept in self-pity for all that he had missed in his life.
He felt his death looming near.

By chance I saw- an old woman sitting by a small-still, crystal clear pool.
Gazing at her reflection in the water- what did she find– you may wonder?
She found an old woman who had wasted her life- pursuing money and material things.
She found the ugly scars and the wrinkles- the wounds to her soul.
She saw her life running out of an ugly sandglass- unstoppable– almost empty.
She found the bitterness- the anger- the frustration written on her face.
She wept in self-pity for all that she had missed in her life.
She felt her death looming near.

By chance I saw- an old couple sitting by a small-still, crystal clear pool
Gazing at their reflections in the water- what did they find– you may wonder?
They found a long life- well spent- pursuing home, children, and family
They found the scars, the wrinkles, the wounds all healed by their love for each other.
They saw their time together as a beautiful sandglass- with more sand yet remaining
They found the hope, the love, and the joy- for each other written in their faces
So– they laughed and sang to each other- about all the blessings in their lives
They felt their love.
