Vasant 2025 Poems - Bert Barry
Restoring
By Bert Barry
The enormous power of snow
– ice
long holding trees – earth in
an immovable vice
yields at last
and the old cabin
re-emerges once more
slate roof
log and mortar wells
not quite vibrant as in years past.
The damage can be repaired
the fireplace will return to dormancy.
This winter was so fierce
even the old – the brave were scared.
Grass appears improbably
soon to be followed by flowers
bordering paths that lead here.
Winter loses its power
and children run free once more.
Only the old woman
who made this homestead with her husband
jointly cherished
smiles in remembrance
rejecting fear – despair
admiring her descendants
the strength and love
they bring to this treasured place.
