Shishir 2018 Poems - Cqyrie Richardson

Child of the Fire

By Cqyrie Richardson

Most only notice your cataclysmic nature
and overlook
the prominence your ashes produce
The heat pulsing through your wave
is too much for the weak to bear
hardship and trouble conspire thus conceiving me into
your turbulent womb
where the fiercest fire engulfes me

The essence of transformation coursing through your flames
forges my soul and crafts an impregnable spirit
Unrivaled, unmatched and unabashed in the face of immovable objects
So, stare into my penetrating eyes
To see the fire that rages in my soul.

Cqyrie Richardson is an inmate at the Anguilla prison. Vanessa Croft Thompson teaches him English.
